History

• January 1, 1963. Cheonan-gun, Cheonan-eup and Hwangseong-myeon were merged and promoted to the category of si, meaning city, by order of Law No 1176. (issued on November 21, 1962) (29 dongs, 10 branch offices), Cheonan-gun was changed to Cheongwon-gun
• May 10, 1995. Cheonan City and Cheonan County were merged to Cheonan City by order of Law No. 4948 (issued on May 10, 1995) (2 eups, 10 myeons, 13 dongs)

Regional Characteristics

• As a city located only 83.6㎞ (expressway) away from the capital Seoul, it serves as the strategic mid-point between the capital region and the western Chungnam region
• A major transportation hub of Korea that has expressways, national highways and roads connecting Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeongsang provinces
